Program Overview

Stream 1 – Entry to Child Life Practice is intended for those wishing to pursue a career as a Certified Child Life Specialist. This stream contains both academic coursework and over 700 hours of clinical education over a full-time, two-year program of study. The majority of coursework is completed online. Upon completion of the MSc in Child Life and Pediatric Psychosocial Care, both streams of students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate comprehension of research methods and the ability to critically evaluate the validity of key assumptions and evidence
  • Demonstrate ability to apply theoretical knowledge and patient and family-centred care principles to diverse pediatric health and community settings
  • Apply concepts of pediatric psychosocial assessment incorporating child, family and health care variables
  • Utilize effective communication strategies and documentation of pediatric psychosocial assessment and interventions to advocate for the diverse needs of infants, children, youth and families

Stream 1 students will additionally be able to:

  • Illustrate scope of child life practice through clinical internships and clinical seminars
  • Integrate knowledge of ethical principles and professional responsibility in accordance with the standards of child life professional practice
  • Demonstrate capacity to assess and develop a plan of care for pediatric patients and families that is responsive to and inclusive of diverse needs
  • Meet child life professional certification eligibility requirements

The Child Life and Pediatric Psychosocial Care Program has a facilitated admission process for Indigenous applicants. In accordance with the Self-Identification policy of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) applicants who wish to apply through this process must complete the supplementary Self-identification Application. Consideration will be given to Stream 1 Indigenous applicants who do not have child life volunteer hours. Those Indigenous applicants who satisfy all other Stream 1 admission requirements will be automatically invited to come for an interview. Interviews are not required for Stream 2 applicants. Indigenous applicants will be prioritized within this stream.
